About the Event

Join NEW Sinfonia and UareUK Refugee Hub for a multimedia exhibition of music and visual art centred around stories of displacement.

An experience unlike any other awaits with interactive art installations and a poignant programme of music presented within an immersive cutting-edge setting by NEW Voices, NEW Sinfonia, and Khrystyna Makar.

This spring marks one year since our first project with UareUK and two years since the invasion of Ukraine and the start of the ongoing war. We’re presenting this concert as a call to and for humanity.

Last year we presented We Rise Together – a concert in collaboration with refugees from the Hub bringing Wrexham’s communities together to tell the stories of all who call Wrexham home. We welcomed members of the refugee Hub to our all-inclusive vocal ensemble NEW Voices and are thrilled that so many have now become long-standing members of the ensemble and will be singing with us once again.

NEW Voices will feature alongside players from NEW Sinfonia and guest soloist Khrystyna Makar performing a programme centred around tales of displacement and interspersed with the poems and stories from refugees. We are impassioned to be presenting another concert which will raise awareness of the realities of being a refugee today in the UK, raise funds to support UareUK, and bring a poignant programme of high-quality music to our audiences.

Our programme will include music from the outspoken pacifist Michael Tippett’s work A Child of Our Time. The piece, written at the outbreak of war in 1939, calls for humanity through drawing numerous musical and spiritual perspectives together by linking them through common themes and experiences.

The concert will also feature the moving In Remembrance by Eleanor Daley, Wayfaring Stranger arranged by Greg Gilpin, and Delyth Rees Hafan Gobaith (‘Haven of Hope’).

‘Humanity feels more divided than ever. Yet humanity is always the solution. Ultimately the only solution.’- Mark Wigglesworth (conductor)
